Last season we had the classroom decorated with beautiful fall colors and fall art. This winter season we’ll be adding some snowy wintery colors. I started off with some crayon shavings on paper hoping to make snow prints but, then decided to use coffee filters. For this craft, I had coffee filters, crayons, a grater and wax paper I got from the Dollar Store.
Take the paper off crayons for ease of shaving onto paper or coffee filters. Shave different colors on paper – I worked with the hues I wanted to accomplish. Next, cover the filters/paper with wax paper. I covered with enough wax paper, so when the crayon melted it would not go on the iron. I still need my iron for household duties:). When the iron is hot press the wax paper. I used on high setting with water was in the chamber to steam if needed. The crayon melts pretty fast giving beautifully blended colors. I kept changing the crayon shavings for different color effect.
I wanted the preschoolers to have a go at it. So they had a chance to iron some of the filters and create beautiful kids art of their own. Please supervise children carefully if you plan on doing this activity with your kids:). This is a wonderful activity for preschoolers especially if they play with an iron board, and play iron in the dramatic play area.
We kept making more filters with different colors to string. The blue hues were blended with the colored ones to create a beautiful garland. I didn’t want to mess with the shape of the filters so they were strung as made. Strung with the extra small clothes pegs I got from Walmart and yarn I have tons of.
We’ll keep adding to the area to reveal our winter scape soon:) Thanks for stopping by and again – here’s hoping you will get a chance to make some with your kids – Miss Sue.
