Change the Color of Flower Petals with Food Coloring – Easy Children Science with Flowers

April 7, 2021 By Lil' Bebe Academy Leave a Comment

An easy and fun activity to do with daffodils or any other flowers is to add them to food coloring water then watch the petals change color.  Head to your garden, not your neighbors but yours – pick some flowers and let’s get started.

Any food coloring will do, check your dollar store or pound shops for the inexpensive kinds to use for many arts and crafts.

Allow children to squeeze / drip food coloring to container, add water then flower stem and leave for some hours or overnight.

That’s it – an easy peasy pie fun STEM activity. The flower petals were placed in water at 10:30am and before 4:00pm the children saw how much dye went to the tip of flower petals.   A  hands-on activity that engaged the childrens’ learning about plant absorbency and the importance water plays with flowers / plants.

Enjoy this activity with your toddler or preschool classroom, daycare or kids at home – xoxo Miss Sue
