Dominate Your Home Childcare Market Now – How to Stand Out

November 14, 2024 By Suzette Salmon

Hello Educators, have you ever wondered how your home childcare can dominate the market and have a waiting pool? Did you know that in 2022, 94,936 in-home family childcare programs were operating compared to 93,124 childcare centers, according to Childcare Aware? With so many options available, it’s clear that families have a wide array of choices. So, how do you make your home childcare program stand out and attract the right families to your doors?

The answer lies in defining and showcasing what makes your program unique. Communicating your values and offerings will fill your spots and create a community of families who deeply appreciate what you provide.

Transform your childcare now! Download the guide

What Makes Your Home Childcare Unique?

To stand out, you must start with a solid understanding of your identity as a provider. Your approach, environment, and philosophy set you apart, and they are the key to attracting families who align with your mission. Take a moment to reflect:

  • What is the heart of your program?
  • What do you want families to feel when they walk into your space?
  • What do you offer that others don’t?

Your answers will form the foundation of your unique value proposition (UVP)—why families choose you over other options.

Educators are you ready to reinvent your home childcare? Take back you time, earn more and operate a successful business without burnout? If you answered YES! Then download this 5 Step Guide @Edulallie the platform I am building specificllay for all things home childcare providers.

Define Your Approach: What is Your Daycare About?

The beauty of family childcare is that it can reflect a wide range of philosophies and styles. Whether you focus on academics, life skills, creativity, or nature, there’s a family out there looking for exactly what you provide. Here are some examples of unique approaches:

A Traditional Preschool Approach

  • Are you focused on school readiness with lesson plans, worksheets, and structured activities? Highlight how your program builds a strong academic foundation, preparing children to thrive in kindergarten and beyond.

A Montessori Environment

  • Do you emphasize practical life skills, independence, and a calm, organized atmosphere? Showcase how your materials and methods guide children to explore at their own pace, building confidence and autonomy.

A Reggio Emilia Philosophy

  • Are you creating a “yes” environment that honors children as capable learners, fostering child-led exploration and creativity? Share the joy of child-driven projects and how you nurture curiosity in your program.

A Nature-Based School

  • Is your childcare rooted in outdoor learning, with gardens, animals, and hands-on seasonal exploration? Highlight the wonder children experience when they interact with hens, ducks, snow, insects, or mud—learning directly from nature.

Your approach doesn’t need to appeal to everyone. Instead, focus on the families who resonate with your vision. They’ll be the ones who value your program and stay long-term.

Be the Program Everyone Talks About

The key to filling your daycare and keeping a strong waiting list is to be so appealing that people can’t help but talk about you. Families will naturally share their experiences when your program is memorable, consistent, and aligned with your unique values.

Here’s how you can create a buzz:

Showcase Your Program Online

  • Use photos, videos, and stories on social media to highlight your daily activities, special moments, and the unique elements of your childcare. Parents love seeing what makes you different!

Get Involved in Your Community

  • Attend local events, collaborate with other small businesses, or host a free parenting workshop. Being active in your community builds trust and visibility.

Encourage Referrals and Testimonials

  • Happy families are your best ambassadors. Ask them to leave reviews, share their experiences, or recommend you to others.

Communicate Your Unique Offerings

  • Be clear about what makes your program special. Let parents know exactly why your program is a great fit, whether it’s your small group size, personalized attention, or a specific philosophy.

Consistency is Key

Parents need to see that your values and your space align. If you promote yourself as a nature-based program, your environment should reflect that with outdoor play areas, natural materials, and a focus on seasonal learning. Your setup should highlight organization and purpose if you’re a Montessori program. Consistency between what you say and what families experience builds confidence and trust.

The Secret to Attracting Families: Be Yourself

Standing out isn’t about competing with every childcare program in your area. It’s about being authentic to who you are and communicating your unique strengths. When families can see exactly what you offer, the ones who align with your values naturally gravitate to your program.

Take some time to reflect:

  • What makes your home childcare special?
  • What are your strengths as a provider?

Once you know your answers, share them boldly and consistently. Families are looking for a provider who fits their needs and values—someone who will care for their child like no one else can. That someone is you.

Stand tall, shine bright, and watch your program thrive.

Here’s an example of our cleanup process. The bell goes off for lunchtime and the children automatically start singing and cleaning up (I don’t usually sing but they do). Some are singing only for the song while others are busy cleaning up like ‘the little red hen.’ A beautiful example of when you work alone and the children are your teammates.
Yes, they’re my little learners and teammates - all hands on deck. We have a wonderful symbiotic relationship harmoniously working together for the good of the environment.
It makes this work enjoyable and it also helps all to learn and appreciate each other - especially when you have a yard this size.

Beautiful slow approach to my early years classroom. I work alone and it’s very important that we all enjoy the space. Children are allowed to move materials, gather, play, learn and then clean up after.
- A small mixed-age ratio provides many opportunities for discoveries, play and lots of hours outdoors.
-This was a rainy day, we also harvest rain for their unending play.
