Nature & Play-Based Home Childcare – Serving Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove & Lombard

January 8, 2025 By Suzette Salmon

Are you searching for a nurturing, intentional childcare space where your child can grow, play, and thrive at their own pace in Dupage County Illinois? At Lil Bebe Academy, we offer a unique environment designed for children aged 18 months to 4 years old. This is the perfect environment for little explorers, creators, and dreamers to embrace the joy of childhood while learning in meaningful and engaging ways.

What Makes Us Different from Other Playschools?

At Lil Bebe Academy, we remain present, spending quality time with children. We believe childhood is savored —not rushed. We are child-led focused, active outdoors all season and we offer a very small ratio. Here’s what sets our small ratio apart:

Outdoor Play

We spend our days connecting with nature, sun, rain, or snow. Whether it’s digging in the garden, raising butterflies, feeding birds, identifying birds, using the mud kitchen, reading, or playing in the outdoor classroom, it fosters curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love for the natural world.

Messy Sensory Learning

From squishing mud pies to experimenting with creative art materials, we embrace messy sensorial moments that spark creativity and hands-on learning. Your child will explore with all their senses in a safe, encouraging space.

Child-Led Exploration

We follow a slow, intentional approach that honors your child’s unique rhythms, interests, and readiness for growth. We encourage curiosity and independence, letting their natural love for learning guide the way.

Real Materials and Tools

We integrate real materials and tools into our program because we believe children are capable. From using child-sized garden tools to exploring real-world objects, we nurture their sense of competence and independence while teaching them how to interact with the world safely and respectfully.

Sustainability in Action

Our classroom is rich in sustainable materials that are used instead of being sent to landfills. Through creative reuse, we inspire innovation and teach children the importance of recycling and caring for our planet.

Cultural Roots

As an immigrant who had to innovate toys, I enjoy using natural loose parts in our learning environment. My humble cultural influences enrich our play-based approach and offer your child a fresh and dynamic perspective on learning.

Mixed-Age Community

Our multi-age setting fosters social-emotional learning and well-being. Younger children learn from their older peers, while older children develop leadership and empathy. It’s a beautiful cycle of growth and connection.

Literacy-Rich Environment

Books and shared reading are part of our daily rhythm. Stories and conversations spark imagination, build dynamic vocabularies, and teach children how to advocate for themselves in age-appropriate ways.

Whole-Child Focus

We nurture emotional, social, and physical growth at Lil Bebe Academy. We value joy, discovery, and meaningful experiences more than rushing to meet traditional milestones.

 A Childhood Worth Savoring

We believe that childhood is a precious, deliberate, and impressionable season with immense value. It is a time to be cherished and nurtured, where each moment becomes an opportunity for discovery, joy, and connection. Childhood deserves to be respected and tended to with care, unfolding at a pace that allows each child to blossom in their own time.

At Lil Bebe Academy, your little one will find a calm and supportive space where they can authentically flourish. Through play, creativity, exploration, and countless discoveries, we honor the beauty of this fleeting season, helping children grow into their fullest selves while making meaningful connections along the way.

Hi Neighbor, I wish every child could have the opportunity to simply be a child and learn through the affordances of outdoor discoveries.

Small environments offer something deeply valuable—time, intimacy, flexibility, and closeness to everyday life. Hands on learning with freedom to explore and no time for worksheets.
Sometimes the richest learning experiences are the simplest🍃

Your environment invites children to explore, create, problem-solve, add new knowledge to old, and gain mastery.

Your backyard is enough to create spaces for young children to explore, discover, and simply be children.

It’s the language of childhood.

Proud Mama Moment 💛

My daughter graduated from high school earlier this summer and received a full Trustee Scholarship to college, where she will be studying American Sign Language (ASL).

It’s such a full-circle moment—she is the reason I started my home childcare 17 years ago. She grew up watching me use sign language with the babies in my care, giving them a way to communicate before they had the words to speak.

I’ve always seen her use the signs and knew she was interested in ASL, but I never realized how seriously she was considering it as a career path. She has told others, “My mom spoke to nonverbal kids, and I want to do the same.”

To my fellow home educators: your children are watching you. I want you to know the value of the work you do for others—and to love and value the career you have chosen.

The little girl who watched her mama sign with babies is now heading to college to study ASL herself.

We are so incredibly proud of you, our little Sunny 🌞. Congratulations, my Trustee Scholar. Go make your mark. ❤️
