A Fresh Blanket of Snow And My Home Childcare. This morning, I woke to a soft layer of snow covering the driveway. My teenage children had shoveled it last night, clearing most of it away, but an overnight dusting remained. I considered heading outside to clear it, but instead, I decided to start my day indoors my home childcare. (see episode 2 of a morning in my home childcare series HERE )

Welcoming the Children
At 7:45 AM, the first child arrived, leaving behind snow-filled boots in the foyer. I recently bought a snow mat from Home Depot, but the lingering scent was overwhelming and too much for my asthmatic daughter. I placed it outside to air out, yet even after several days, the smell persists. Now, it remains outdoors, in the snow.

As more children arrived, I wiped away the snow from the foyer, knowing today would be filled with outdoor play. My older girls eagerly asked to continue a sewing project they had been working on for a while. They proudly showcased their progress before we settled in for breakfast.

Circle Time and Storytelling
Following breakfast, we gathered for circle time. Since I anticipated a morning full of snowman-building, I chose to read The Biggest Snowman Ever by Steven Kroll and Illustated by Jeni Bassett to set the tone. Our circle time was brief, and soon after, we bundled up and headed outside.

Snow Play Adventures
The children excitedly started gathering snow to build a snowman. However, today’s snow was light and powdery, making it difficult to pack. One of the older children had an idea: “Miss Sue, just like clay, I can add water and mold it together!”
I loved her thinking! I grabbed a water bottle from inside—one I keep on a ledge by the door for watering our indoor plants. She eagerly poured water onto her snow pile, attempting to mold a snowman. Despite her efforts, the snow wouldn’t cooperate, and she eventually abandoned the project—poor Miss Sue wasn’t much help either!

Instead, she ran to join the other children who were sledding, jumping into snow piles, and brushing away snow with their gloved hands. The morning was filled with laughter and giggles. We even heard the birds chirping—a special treat, as some days they remain silent.

Back Indoors for Lunch and Learning
When the lunch bell rang, we made our way inside. After gathering their lunch bags, one of my older preschoolers initiated a spontaneous letter quiz with the younger children—she loves to play teacher! I truly believe that when learning is child-led, children become active participants in their education. Their enthusiasm always amazes me.

After lunch, the children enjoyed process art before settling down for nap time. With the house finally quiet, I put a load of laundry in the machine, hoping to squeeze in another before the day’s end.
