Drawing Flowers in the Field: A Simple Spring Morning in Home Childcare (Episode 15)

April 30, 2025 By Suzette Salmon

Spring is the season of noticing and it is perfect for our home childcare.
The dandelions and violets are carpeting the grass now—soft purples and sunny yellows weaving across the green. Life is emerging again, and a certain beauty follows a long winter.
Yesterday, I planned a simple but meaningful day for us. I asked families to send their children in comfortable clothes and shoes, knowing we would spend the morning outdoors. The plan is to visit the nature grounds, observe what we see, journal, and spend some time playing at the park.

If you’ve been here for a while, you know that families send lunches from home now, so I no longer have to hurry back to prepare meals or stress about the night before. Read more about that shift. It’s a shift that has given us more freedom and ease.
So today, we skipped our usual indoor circle time and headed straight out into the wild.
The focus of our morning was simple: draw what we see.
With crayons in hand, the children nestled into the grass and began to draw the flowers that carpeted the ground.
Yellow bursts.
Purple sprigs.
Green blades.
Life is everywhere.

I’ll share more about our nature walk and discoveries in future posts. But today, this slow, simple moment of drawing in a field of flowers was enough.

Here’s an example of our cleanup process. The bell goes off for lunchtime and the children automatically start singing and cleaning up (I don’t usually sing but they do). Some are singing only for the song while others are busy cleaning up like ‘the little red hen.’ A beautiful example of when you work alone and the children are your teammates.
Yes, they’re my little learners and teammates - all hands on deck. We have a wonderful symbiotic relationship harmoniously working together for the good of the environment.
It makes this work enjoyable and it also helps all to learn and appreciate each other - especially when you have a yard this size.

Beautiful slow approach to my early years classroom. I work alone and it’s very important that we all enjoy the space. Children are allowed to move materials, gather, play, learn and then clean up after.
- A small mixed-age ratio provides many opportunities for discoveries, play and lots of hours outdoors.
-This was a rainy day, we also harvest rain for their unending play.

Nature gives children something real to think about. Listen to the children - bumblebees and butterflies like nectar too.
