How Our Home Daycare Reused a Fallen Tree for Creative Outdoor Art (Episode 17)

May 20, 2025 By Suzette Salmon

In our home daycare, nature often leads the way—but nothing prepared us for the powerful Illinois storm that changed our outdoor space overnight.

Fallen Mulberry Tree

Illinois weather surprised us this week. During my son’s middle school graduation, hail and strong winds swept through our area. The next night, we experienced something even more unusual—a dust storm. I was shocked when my phone issued a “dust storm warning.” And yes, it happened—the uptick in dirty cars at local washes is proof.

By morning, our beloved mulberry tree had been uprooted. It landed on our fence, knocked down our outdoor camera, and tore off the bird box that had housed a family of baby sparrows.

Thankfully, the fence wasn’t damaged, the camera can be repaired, and I could rescue the baby birds, except for one. Still, it was hard to lose the tree. It shaded our outdoor classroom, attracted countless birds, and added a sense of calm beauty through every season.

I had plans to make mulberry jam this summer. The children used the berries last year in several nature-based art projects—paints, potions, and play. That tree offered more than fruit and shade. It inspired us.

But instead of discarding what remained, we chose to reuse it. My son sawed branches into tree cookies—small wooden rounds the children painted today.

They noticed the bare spot in the yard and asked about it. Their questions shifted into excitement when they saw the art invitation: tree cookies and paper bags ready for painting. I wanted to offer them space for expression, storytelling, and a tangible lesson in resilience, intelligent materials, and reuse.

I often smile at how I pivot and use what’s right in the yard to guide the children’s learning and curiosity.

Until next time, I’m Miss Sue—your educator in the trenches, guiding you one small step at a time toward a big impact.

Hi Neighbor, I wish every child could have the opportunity to simply be a child and learn through the affordances of outdoor discoveries.

Small environments offer something deeply valuable—time, intimacy, flexibility, and closeness to everyday life. Hands on learning with freedom to explore and no time for worksheets.

Your environment invites children to explore, create, problem-solve, add new knowledge to old, and gain mastery.

Your backyard is enough to create spaces for young children to explore, discover, and simply be children.

It’s the language of childhood.

Proud Mama Moment 💛

My daughter graduated from high school earlier this summer and received a full Trustee Scholarship to college, where she will be studying American Sign Language (ASL).

It’s such a full-circle moment—she is the reason I started my home childcare 17 years ago. She grew up watching me use sign language with the babies in my care, giving them a way to communicate before they had the words to speak.

I’ve always seen her use the signs and knew she was interested in ASL, but I never realized how seriously she was considering it as a career path. She has told others, “My mom spoke to nonverbal kids, and I want to do the same.”

To my fellow home educators: your children are watching you. I want you to know the value of the work you do for others—and to love and value the career you have chosen.

The little girl who watched her mama sign with babies is now heading to college to study ASL herself.

We are so incredibly proud of you, our little Sunny 🌞. Congratulations, my Trustee Scholar. Go make your mark. ❤️
