12 Secrets to Home Daycare Success Revealed!

August 24, 2024 By Suzette Salmon

You’re not alone if you’re on the fence about starting a successful home daycare. This path can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also challenging. Before you apply for your home daycare license, I will show you some basic things to consider. I have been a home childcare owner for over sixteen years, and I am here to tell you operating a home daycare involves much more than just loving children; it requires careful planning, adaptability, and a strong commitment to your business and the children you’ll care for. To help you make an informed decision, here are 12 important things to consider before taking the plunge.

Understand Your Personality Type

Running a home daycare requires patience, adaptability, and comfort with chaos. Consider your personality—are you introverted or extroverted? Can you advocate for your needs and remain approachable? Your personality will significantly impact your daily interactions with children and parents.

People Will Be in Your Home

Your home will become your workplace. How comfortable are you with having people in your personal space every day? Consider how you’ll maintain a professional environment while preserving your family’s privacy.

Test Your Market – Is There a Need?

Research your local community. Are there other home daycares or centers nearby? What is the demand for daycare services? Identify if there’s a particular niche you can fill, such as infants, part-time care, or after-school programs.

Define Your Offerings

Decide who you will serve. Will you cater to infants, toddlers, or preschoolers? Will you offer after-school care? Knowing your strengths will help you market effectively and set clear client expectations.

Set Financial Goals

Establish realistic and sustainable financial goals. Will you make $1,000 weekly with three children or six? Your pricing and the number of children will dictate your income and workload. Be mindful of your market rate, and avoid underpricing or overpricing your services.

Plan the Use of Your Home

Decide how many rooms in your home will be used for daycare. How will you set up spaces for activities, naps, and meals? Consider which areas will be off-limits to children and how you’ll maintain personal and daycare spaces.

Source Toys and Supplies

Consider how you’ll source toys and educational materials. Will you buy new items, shop at thrift stores, or rely on donations? Have a plan to rotate and update your supplies regularly to keep the environment engaging.

Decide Whether You Will Serve Food or Families will Provide

Will you provide meals or ask your families to pack lunches? If you choose to serve food, plan for meal preparation, dietary restrictions, and food safety. Factor this into your daily routine and budget.

Define Your Ideal Clients

Think about the hours you want to commit to this business. Will you work from 6 am to 6 pm? Do you prefer full-time or part-time clients? Define your ideal client and tailor your marketing accordingly.

Manage Your Own Kids’ Schedules

If you have your own children, plan how their schedules will fit into your daycare operations. How will you manage school drop-offs, pickups and other activities without disrupting your daycare routine?

Plan Your Time Off

Determine how many days off per year you need to recharge. Starting with all federal holidays as paid time off is a good baseline. Communicate your time-off policy to clients upfront to avoid misunderstandings later.

Decide on Year-Round or Seasonal Operation

Will you operate year-round, or do you want summers off? Consider how this decision will affect your income and whether it meets the needs of your target market. Some providers find year-round operations more stable, while others prefer taking summers off to avoid burnout.

Conclusion:

Starting a home daycare is a big decision, and it’s very important to consider all business aspects before diving in. Reflecting on these 12 key areas will better equip you to build a daycare business that aligns with your goals, personality, and lifestyle. Remember, careful planning now will lead to a more rewarding and successful experience down the road. So take your time, ask yourself the tough questions, and ensure you’re ready to plunge into this wonderful world of being a home daycare owner.

Until next time, I am your educator in the trenches with you – xoxo Miss Sue

Your environment invites children to explore, create, problem-solve, add new knowledge to old, and gain mastery.

Your backyard is enough to create spaces for young children to explore, discover, and simply be children.

It’s the language of childhood.

Proud Mama Moment 💛

My daughter graduated from high school earlier this summer and received a full Trustee Scholarship to college, where she will be studying American Sign Language (ASL).

It’s such a full-circle moment—she is the reason I started my home childcare 17 years ago. She grew up watching me use sign language with the babies in my care, giving them a way to communicate before they had the words to speak.

I’ve always seen her use the signs and knew she was interested in ASL, but I never realized how seriously she was considering it as a career path. She has told others, “My mom spoke to nonverbal kids, and I want to do the same.”

To my fellow home educators: your children are watching you. I want you to know the value of the work you do for others—and to love and value the career you have chosen.

The little girl who watched her mama sign with babies is now heading to college to study ASL herself.

We are so incredibly proud of you, our little Sunny 🌞. Congratulations, my Trustee Scholar. Go make your mark. ❤️
