How to Grow Apple Tree from Seeds: Kids Hands On Science and Nature Education

February 21, 2025 By Suzette Salmon

Did you know you can grow an apple tree from the seeds inside the apples you eat? This simple hands on science and educational project is worth trying. The germination of apple seeds is an educational way to introduce children to gardening, and the wonders of nature—all from the comfort of your home or classroom.

In the spring of 2024, we decided to try planting apple seeds using a simple method—moist paper towels. Our goal was to observe their growth over time and see if we could nurture them into small trees. This hands-on approach allowed the children to engage with nature meaningfully while developing patience and curiosity.

What You’ll Need:

  • Apple seeds (from an organic apple)
  • Paper towels
  • A clear cup or mason jar
  • Water spray bottle

How to Plant Apple Seeds in a Mason Jar

  1. Prepare the Paper Towel – Roll a paper towel into a loose ring, similar to a paper tube. Place it inside a mason jar so it stands upright.
  2. Moisten the Paper Towel – Add a small amount of water to the jar and gently roll it around so the paper towel absorbs the moisture evenly. Once the towel is damp, pour out any excess water.
  3. Add the Seeds – Carefully ease the paper towel away from the inner surface of the jar using a pencil or stick. Place the apple seeds along the outer edges of the rolled paper towel, sandwiching them between the towel and the glass. This allows the seeds to absorb moisture while remaining visible for easy observation. Avoid letting the seeds sink to the bottom of the jar or get lost inside the paper towel roll.
  4. Keep Moist – Assign children the role of plant caretakers, encouraging them to mist the paper towel daily to maintain moisture. This is especially important during winter, as indoor heating can dry out plants quickly.
  5. Choose a Location – Place the jar on a windowsill or a table that gets natural light, but not necessarily direct sunlight. Keep the paper towel moist but not overly wet, as too much moisture can cause mold.

Our Experience Growing Apple Trees

We successfully germinated five apple seedlings and carefully planted and nurtured them. However, after being away on vacation for two weeks, I returned to find that only two of the apple trees had survived. Despite this, these two apple trees remained strong through the winter months, a testament to their resilience.

As we approach March 2025, I am hopeful they will revive and continue growing, showcasing the success of this hands-on learning project. Watching the children take part in growing apple seeds has been a rewarding experience. Every time they eat an apple, they eagerly save the seeds, asking to grow another tree.

I am proud to steward a nature-based learning environment where children can connect with the world around them. Experiences like this go far beyond worksheets—giving children the chance to observe, question, and participate in the natural cycles of life.

I encourage all educators, not just home childcare providers, to try growing an apple tree with the children in your care. If you run a small home childcare, know that you can start this indoors, just as we have, and later transition the seedlings to a patio or garden when the weather is right.

Exploring More Seed-Growing Experiments

Alongside our apple seeds, we also planted corn and beans using the same method. As you can see, these sprouted beautifully as well. This simple technique works with many different seeds, making it a great way to start your summer garden indoors before transplanting outside.

The children in my home daycare loved these science experiments, and the best part was watching their excitement as they cared for the garden all summer long. See this post  Growing Corn in Your Home Child Care: An Educational Experience

Have you ever tried growing apple seeds with children? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

Until next time I am Miss Sue, your educator in the trencehs with you, working alongside nature loving children.

Your environment invites children to explore, create, problem-solve, add new knowledge to old, and gain mastery.

Your backyard is enough to create spaces for young children to explore, discover, and simply be children.

It’s the language of childhood.

Proud Mama Moment 💛

My daughter graduated from high school earlier this summer and received a full Trustee Scholarship to college, where she will be studying American Sign Language (ASL).

It’s such a full-circle moment—she is the reason I started my home childcare 17 years ago. She grew up watching me use sign language with the babies in my care, giving them a way to communicate before they had the words to speak.

I’ve always seen her use the signs and knew she was interested in ASL, but I never realized how seriously she was considering it as a career path. She has told others, “My mom spoke to nonverbal kids, and I want to do the same.”

To my fellow home educators: your children are watching you. I want you to know the value of the work you do for others—and to love and value the career you have chosen.

The little girl who watched her mama sign with babies is now heading to college to study ASL herself.

We are so incredibly proud of you, our little Sunny 🌞. Congratulations, my Trustee Scholar. Go make your mark. ❤️
