Why Do Kids Stick Their Tongues Out When They’re Concentrating? (Episode 14)

April 24, 2025 By Suzette Salmon

Have you ever wondered why kids stick their tongues out when they’re deeply focused on a task?  You’ve probably seen it before — maybe while a little one is carefully threading beads, snipping paper, coloring, pouring milk, or deep in process art play. You might be familiar with eye-hand coordination and how the brain supports physical movement. Similarly, in these moments, their hands are focused… and there it is: the tip of their tongue, gently poking out in deep concentration.

It’s one of those small but meaningful reminders that grounds me in the truth of the early years: children learn with their whole bodies.

Let’s unpack why this might be happening.

(No, I’m not a neurologist — but after years in the field, I’ve watched this learning unfold again and again.)

It’s All Connected

The part of the brain that controls movement is closely linked to the part that manages the mouth and face. So when a child is deeply focused on a fine motor task, the tongue might appear—even though it’s not necessary for the job. Their whole body is involved, syncing together in the act of learning.

A Throwback to Babyhood

If you’ve worked with babies—or raised some of your own—you know they explore the world with their mouths. Psychologist Jean Piaget identified this as the sensorimotor stage of development. During this time, mouthing is a natural way for infants to understand their environment. As children grow, that instinct doesn’t just disappear—it transforms. That tongue-out moment in a preschooler? It’s an echo of early learning: the mouth still helping the hands make sense of what they’re doing.

They’re in the Zone — Their Own Zone of Genius

That little tongue peeking out is often a sign that the child is in a state of flow—fully present, fully immersed. They’re not concerned with how they look or who’s watching—they’re just in it. This is what deep engagement looks like in the early years—pure, undistracted, embodied learning.

A Sensory Anchor

For some children—especially sensory seekers or neurodivergent learners—small oral movements serve a bigger purpose. The tongue becomes a steadying tool, a way to self-regulate while staying focused. It’s quiet, subtle, and incredibly supportive of their nervous system as they concentrate.

Dear educators, pause and smile the next time you see a tongue hanging out, peeking to the side, or gently resting on the lips. You’re witnessing something special — a spark of curiosity, a moment of creativity, and the quiet wonder of whole-body learning.

Let us say yes to that wonder.

Small environments offer something deeply valuable—time, intimacy, flexibility, and closeness to everyday life. Hands on learning with freedom to explore and no time for worksheets.

Your environment invites children to explore, create, problem-solve, add new knowledge to old, and gain mastery.

Your backyard is enough to create spaces for young children to explore, discover, and simply be children.

It’s the language of childhood.

Proud Mama Moment 💛

My daughter graduated from high school earlier this summer and received a full Trustee Scholarship to college, where she will be studying American Sign Language (ASL).

It’s such a full-circle moment—she is the reason I started my home childcare 17 years ago. She grew up watching me use sign language with the babies in my care, giving them a way to communicate before they had the words to speak.

I’ve always seen her use the signs and knew she was interested in ASL, but I never realized how seriously she was considering it as a career path. She has told others, “My mom spoke to nonverbal kids, and I want to do the same.”

To my fellow home educators: your children are watching you. I want you to know the value of the work you do for others—and to love and value the career you have chosen.

The little girl who watched her mama sign with babies is now heading to college to study ASL herself.

We are so incredibly proud of you, our little Sunny 🌞. Congratulations, my Trustee Scholar. Go make your mark. ❤️
